One of our speakers from the next ALX Women Mastermind, Megan Quinn, is doing an event next week. She graciously agreed to write a post about that event! Learn more about Megan and her passion for supporting women!
When my daughter was just a few weeks old, I was told she likely had a dairy and soy allergy. She was breastfed at the time so for me that meant, you got it, no more dairy or soy. Seems pretty straight forward, right? Well, yes, if you’re eating an apple. But if you’re eating some sort of packaged food or out at a restaurant, not so much.
As a certified health coach, I like to think of myself as, somewhat, of a food detective. Yet, before this postpartum period, I really hadn’t given much thought to soy lecithin or what exactly IS natural flavoring anyway? Both, of which, can be problematic if you have a soy allergy.
And if I wasn’t thinking about these things, an average consumer certainly was not.
I did eventually get the hang of my new dietary restrictions and successfully eliminated both dairy and soy for the better part of 9 months.
I am no longer dairy or soy-free and, in some ways, it’s a big relief, but the whole experience left me feeling pretty frustrated.
Frustrated because, despite my best efforts, I realized I still consume so much (food, products, news, etc) on autopilot.
It probably looks something like this: Leaning over my kitchen counter, phone in hand, eating some “healthy-ish” snack while scrolling through Instagram and news alerts while frantically loading my Amazon shopping cart…
Can you relate?
But here’s the thing, we don’t have to remain frustrated because at any moment we can snap out of it. We can choose better. We can unload the cart. We can ask more thoughtful questions. We can get motivated and INFORMED.
You know what they say, knowledge is power, my friends 😉
So tell me, are you interested in learning more about becoming a more “conscious consumer” for yourself and your family?
Then I hope you’ll join me at my next workshop, February 15. I’ll provide actionable information and resources for navigating our highly processed, green-washed world in manageable ways that won’t break the bank or your spirit.
Can’t wait! I hope you’ll join.
